The booming construction industry on the island of Hainan attracts migrant workers from inland provinces.
A Special Economic Zone since 1988, Hainan's 2008 GDP was 145.9 billion yuan ($21 billion), the fourth-smallest in all of China's provinces, contributing only 0.5 percent to the entire country's economy. The average GDP per head in Hainan in 2008 was 17,175 yuan ($2,472), 23rd out of 27 provinces and autonomous regions.
The blueprint for Hainan to become a top international tourist resort, as announced by the central government on December 31, will involve all levels of society including the hard-working migrant families of the Meiwan brick factory in the town of Yongfa, Chengmai county.
