Sheets of last year's Beijing Evening News cover holes and stains of the cinnabar sofa where the retired director of logistics of the Chaoyang District Bureau of Grain ensconces himself.

He breathes in deeply and prepares to indulge in tangible nostalgia towards thousands of dusty objects piled around him on earth-colored shelves and square brown tables.

"Society and the pace of life has developed so unthinkably fast," Xie Jialin sighs with a tinge of unclear emotion. "I wish today's youth might know something of their past."

"No one should distort history. We should treasure it."

Xie is one of the donors of more than 3,000 objects, 1,000 of which are on display at the Memory of a City exhibition in the Capital Museum in Beijing until October 31.
